The purpose of this project was to set up an area in the landscape to grow food. This project located along the 68 highway in Monterey County consisted of constructing several raised garden beds. The planting plan introduced a privacy hedge and specimen topiaries with a contrast of colorful understory plantings. The sandy loam of this Carmel landscape site was amended with organic compost to improve soil structure, water holding capacity, and microbial activity. Subsequent planting, 3" of small bark mulch was applied to the soil surface to suppress weeds, insulate the soil and retain moisture.
