Repurposing Carmel Stone

Updated: Nov 22

Repurposing Carmel Stone isn’t just about sustainability—it’s about honoring the traditions of the Monterey Peninsula. By using this local material, we maintain our respect for the visual harmony that defines the Monterey peninsula and surrounding areas.

We recently completed a luxury landscaping project in Pacific Grove with repurposed Carmel Stone from a home that was slated for demolition in Carmel.

This project included the installation of a 6-foot high Carmel Stone garden wall, custom fire pit, deck, water features, raised garden beds, flagstone path, and vegetable beds. Along with these features, we implemented an irrigation system, a French drain system, and landscape lighting.

Expert Craftsmanship: Carmel Stone Wall

With an existing stone wall on the property, it was crucial that our repurposed Carmel Stone blended seamlessly.

Our stonemasons carefully inspect and hand-chip each piece of Carmel Stone to match the existing wall patterns. This precision ensures a perfect fit, preserving the aesthetic and creating a durable, eco-friendly solution.

Carmel Stone and the Custom Fire Pit

A Carmel Stone fire pit is both beautiful and inviting. We use a concrete block structure lined with firebrick or CMU (concrete masonry units) and veneered with Carmel stone.

Sustainable Landscaping: Drainage Solutions

Due to the property’s slope and proximity to a natural spring, we installed a French drain system and sump pump to manage the high water tables and moisture levels. Both systems were tailored to the site’s unique conditions.

The French drain directs groundwater away from vulnerable areas like garden beds, using perforated pipes to prevent water buildup that could cause damage.

The sump pump was added to lower areas of the property to remove excess water.

Eco-Friendly Landscaping & Sustainability

At Carmel Point Landscapes, we are committed to sustainable practices that minimize environmental impact.

By repurposing Carmel Stone, we reduce the need for new materials and prevent perfectly usable stone from going to landfill.

By integrating advanced drainage systems and sustainable practices, we create high-end landscapes that remain healthy and functional.

This philosophy extends throughout our designs and eco-friendly hardscaping. Our horticulture experts ensure each project respects the community's tradition and integrates seamlessly with its natural surroundings. Our work reflects the craftsmanship, sustainability, and timeless appeal of Carmel Stone as a signature element in luxury landscapes.
