We wanted to share some insights on an exceptional group of garden plants: Salvias, also known as Sages. These plants are famous for their remarkable ability to attract hummingbirds and butterflies, bringing vibrant life and movement to any landscape. A wonderful variety of Salvia types is readily available at local nurseries, offering something beautiful for every garden style and preference.

Among the many fantastic varieties, the 'Pozo Blue' Sage is a personal favorite, especially for sunny spots in areas like Carmel Valley and Big Sur. This remarkable native hybrid is a cross between Salvia clevelandii and Salvia leucophylla, originally cultivated by a skilled grower from Santa Margarita. Like all Salvias, it's part of the mint family, easily identified by its distinctive square stems and wonderfully aromatic foliage. The 'Pozo Blue' Sage offers numerous benefits, including impressive drought tolerance once established, long-lasting blooms throughout the summer, and natural deer resistance, which is a significant concern for many of our clients. Its ability to attract hummingbirds and butterflies is a significant bonus, and it's quite adaptable to various soil conditions, making it a versatile choice. We often incorporate Salvia 'Pozo Blue' into our designs to introduce beautiful color to meadows of Carex or as a complementary plant when mixed with Yarrow and Verbena 'De la Mina'. It truly dispels the notion that California native plants can't be exciting and colorful!

We're passionate about showcasing the beauty and numerous benefits of native plants in our landscape designs, and 'Pozo Blue' Sage is a prime example of how they can enhance a garden while being sustainable and thriving in our local climate.
