In designing landscapes within the private gated community of Otter Cove in Carmel Highlands, we take various factors into account. Initially, we address our clients' needs, followed by crafting a design that satisfies them while adhering to the guidelines of the coastal commission, homeowners association, and Monterey County's landscape ordinances. Selecting plants is straightforward; we opt for California native species suited to the rocky, windswept coastline of Carmel and Big Sur.
When designing in highly sensitive coastal environments, the Coastal Commission mandates the use of 100% site-specific native plants. This means we only utilize native plants that naturally occur in this area. Examples include Seaside Woolly Sunflower, Dudleya, Yarrow, Sticky monkey flower, California sagebrush, California coffee berry, Douglas iris, Buckwheats, and Ceanothus. These species are adapted to thrive in sun, wind, salt, and fog, clinging to rocks and enduring ocean spray. Few plants can withstand the intense coastal conditions, so it's crucial to use a palette that will survive and appear as though it belongs, blending seamlessly into the natural environment.
