Not sure how to handle a small, flat space? Berm it up! Berms are a fantastic way to incorporate height and interest into landscapes to add character. This landscape design in Marina used berms and boulders to provide context and turn a boring sandlot into a functional outdoor gathering space. The curving planting beds create a nice contrast with rectilinear lot and allow the focal plants to pop. Those plants include drought-tolerant natives such as California lilac and Sage, and also some tried-and-true ornamental varieties such as a beautiful Japanese Maple. All in all, this small project quickly turned a blank canvas into a beautiful landscape ready to be enjoyed.
