When I studied Arboriculture at Calpoly I remember my professor teaching us about the 3-D's of pruning. Anything Dead, Diseased or Dying can be pruned. This is a good rule of thumb to follow in the Carmel landscape because once you cut that limb- it's gone! Other reasons to prune would be for future structure and growth, safety reducing the sail effect and preventing wind throw. Suckers, crossing branches that rub together creating wounds or poorly attached branches may also be removed. Trees are the most valuable plants in the landscape and keeping them healthy is a priority when landscaping in Carmel. Here's a recent tree pruning project we headed up for one of our favorite clients in Carmel.
