Big Sur
Middle Road
This landscape project in Big Sur was designed using materials that embody both strength and natural beauty. For this project, we hand-selected granite boulders from a local quarry to create a series of dry-stack walls, pathways, stairs, and terraces.
Granite was chosen for its bold color, unique texture, and permanence—qualities that mirror the lasting presence of ancient sites. The granite was carefully hand-chipped to fit precisely, ensuring both structural integrity and visual appeal. The dry-stack technique, which requires no mortar, relies on the careful stacking of each stone to create a stable, weathered appearance.

The dry-stack walls, in particular, were designed to enhance privacy while blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The slight tilt of each stone adds to the timeless aesthetic, evoking the feeling of ancient ruins while providing both elegance and functionality. This expertise in working with granite ensures that every feature not only withstands the forces of nature but also contributes to the overall harmony of the landscape.
